Negative Thoughts…
Negative Thoughts…
I’m not talking about glass-half-full kind of thinking…it’s the title of today’s Ways to Use it Challenge. I told you it would be outside the box!
For this challenge, think of different ways you can use negative space. Now this concept can be a little hard to pin down but here’s a few ideas to give you the idea of what I mean. When you punch out chipboard shapes and you’re left with the outside so that the image is empty space…that is negative space. It’s also a great way to use up chipboard and get more value! Things like stencils and masks can be used for negative space. Punching or die-cutting and using the remaining piece that has the negative shape in it….there’s lots of different concepts for this…try it out! Here’s the link.

I recently purchased this Making Memories Passport paper as I just couldn’t resist. I originally was going to scrap with it (better go buy more!) but instead decided to pair it up Kim’s Paradise Found set when I decided to use the Maya Road airplane negative chipboard piece. You’ll find Kim’s images tucked in all over this card…the surfboard, the airplane, flower, some phrases. I also paired it up with my French Script Backgrounder that is stamped in a faded look right on the patterned paper.
To create another negative shape…the outline of something that is not there…I pulled out a flourish chipboard piece, traced it and then stitched with my sewing machine. I love adding clusters of embellishments which are grouped together on the right side of the design. One detail that I like but may be hard to see…I added little dots of blue Stickles on the engines to highlight the plane.
Now I’ve totally forgotten to tell you about this week’s Dare to Get Dirty Challenges as Splitcoaststampers.com . If you’re a Fan Club Member…stop by and join in the challenges hosted by the Dirty Dozen Design Team and the Dirty Dozen Alumni. I’ll be holding a challenge there tomorrow at noon EST. Check out all the details here.
Have fun with the challenge!

Julia, Very pretty. I like the idea of tracing the flourish chipboard piece and stitching it. Nice Touch.
Cool card Julia. Your title had me for a moment. Never thought much about those pieces once I punched out my die cuts or chipboards. Hmmm, have to give them a second thought. Thanks.
Love your creation! Thanks for all the tips and ideas for negative space! I always learn sooo much visiting here!

These is AWEsome! What a great idea to think about negative space! Love your layout and the stunning collage look you archived. :0)
You did a great job of filling up all the empty spaces; but yet it doesn’t look that busy! I love it!
Really like the stitched flourish, J! did that take you forever to do? seems like it would….
Ooooooh…look at those stitches! I love how zigged in the middle of the straight stitches. I’m SO going to “borrow” that idea! Very cute card!
