A Faithful Friend

Sherman
jks-sherman.jpg

It’s a sad morning in the Stainton household. Our very dear and faithful friend passed away in the night. We’ll miss his constant presence, his warm brown eyes, his gentleness. Sherman was born on our farm Christmas Day 1997 as one of thirteen puppies. He was the one we chose to keep and named him Sherman after the tank…he was a very sturdy build. He loved “patrolling” the borders of our property and playing with the kids. He never cared how rough they were but when tired of the rough-housing would just stand up, shake them off and lumber off. I knew that Sherman was getting older and have been keeping a special eye on him. He rarely left the porch except when he needed to. He seemed content to lie in the sun. It was a bit of a surprise to go out this morning and not find him there. We found him behind the house as if he were sleeping.

Sherman was a very special dog and will be missed.

I don’t have a card for you this morning and will be back with the WT challenge next week. If you check out the SCS forums, Cindy Coutts has kindly stepped in to host for me today.

Take care,

Julia

Julia, I am so sorry for the loss of your dear Sherman. Our pets are like our children and only pet lovers can really understand that statement. As with all loss, time heals the wound, so hang in there.

    Julia and family,
Darn it all! what is it about dogs that they can sneak into our hearts and leave such voids when they leave? Is it because they love us unconditionally? Is it because they don’t care what we look like first thing in the morning? Hang in there. As a fellow dog owner, I sympathize.

  18. Cindyon 11 Jun 2009 at 9:14 am

So sorry to hear of your loss. I’ll be thinking of you and your family as you adjust to this change. My sympathies go out to you.

Having recently lost a dog that was with me for 16+ years, I can relate to the loss felt when such a beloved pet is no longer physically with us. One thing that comforts me is to think how good a life my dog had and from what you wrote of Sherman it sounds like he was a very happy and loved dog. May the joyous memory of Sherman remain to remind you of all the gifts he brought to your life and your family’s lives and in that way he is never really gone.

    All the best,
    Shay.

So very sorry to hear of the loss of your beloved friend, Sherman. He was a beautiful looking dog and must have been well loved. It’s been a sad day today reading about Sherman and then Anna (Sweet Miss Daisy) lost her chicken, Lefty. - I know all pets will be missed but live on in our hearts and memories. May your family be comforted by those memories.

    Julia,
What a handsome fellow, and one who I imagine will be sorely missed for a long time to come. I can’t imagine the heart break you all are experiencing right now. My Stella is my baby, and I can’t imagine my days with out her. Hugs and wishes to all of you. If you are familiar with the Rainbow Bridge poem, I find it a nice thought to think of where Sherman is right now…
Squishy hugs to you and your family,
    Diane

    Julia,

I am so sorry for your loss of Sherman. He has the most gentle eyes I think I have ever seen. It’s so hard to lose a pet, because they are a family member. Hopefully, Sherman did not suffer and is now resting on that big porch in doggie heaven. Time will help and the pain will slowly fade and you will be able to remember the happy memories of the time Sherman was with your family.

Oh Julia - my heart goes out to you and your family. Murphy is our special furry child and he is starting to show his age and slow down a bit. He will be 11 in October. Murphy was bottle fed from day 1 as his mother had the huge litter in a ditch after someone had hit her with a car. He has his share of problems - lupus, severe allergies, etc. besides being 130 pounds and tall for a lab, but has been doing well. I just hope he goes in his sleep - I have never had to make THE DECISION. Maggie was 17 a bull dog mix when she died in her sleep and then 6 months later George a English Springer/Lab mix died of liver cancer at age 11. We don’t have children and that makes it even harder. I hope we have so many special friends to help us through the time as you do. Please share a happy memory of Sherman for us. Our hearts go out to you and your family.

I read this the day you posted it and cried knowing how hard it is to lose your dog and knowing that our 14 year old golden retriever was very close to the end. She died last Wednesday leaving a big hole in our home but many memories of a wonderful, sweet, loving companion. Dogs are such a wonderful part of our lives.
