A Perfect Summer’s Day … and a unique challenge
Today’s design is one that I created for my husband’s birthday this week. He loves the Thomas Kinkade images and so I chose the most masculine of the four just released designs to create a card for him. Wanting to play up on the masculine theme I decided to go with a ranch/horse/distressed look. When I started creating this design…I actually had a piece of suede leather I’d picked up at Michael’s and just finished using on a magazine assignment. I just love the softness of it and thought…hmmmm…wonder how stamping would look on that. And so….my card design was off to a great start and also gave me the idea for today’s Ways to Use it Challenge. So please…don’t “hide” from today’s challenge….I know, groan, groan, groan 
… we are going to find ways to use Leather!
Now you may be thinking this is a tough challenge. But wait! You can do it! Leather, suede, rawhide string, how about a faux leather technique? I’m seen faux leather done with masking tape and a faux suede technique done with liquid applique. If you are really desparate…I’ll even let you use a stamp of a cow! LOL I know its a bit of a stretch but hey! It’s all good. How about an image of cowboy boots…they are leather. You get the idea…have fun with it! Come play along at WT148 Leather.
Each Day Brings its Own Gifts
As I mentioned above…this design started with my image and the suede. This Thomas Kinkade stamp from Cornish Heritage Farms is A Perfect Summer’s Day. To create my design, I stamped it with Black Palette Hybrid ink from Stewart Superior and then colored it in with my Prismacolor colored pencils. After cutting out the design I restamped the image in Burnt Umber, stamped it again with Weathered Wood and then adhered it on top. A little sponging and distressed edges finishes it off.
To stamp on the suede, I simply cut it to the size I wished. Using my Canvas Palette Hybrid ink I stamped the suede using my Spanish Script Backgrounder stamp. To adhere it to my design, I lightly added Mono Craft adhesive to the surface of my cardstock and applied the suede. To hold it firmly…I added some eyelets with my crop-a-dile and then tied them with linen thread for interest and texture.
Quick Tip: Suede can be purchased near the beading section in Michael’s. It easily cuts with sharp scissors and to get great straight cuts…I found my Tonic Guillotine Cutter was amazing.
