Shakin’ it Up!

Published by Julia Stainton at 6:52 am under Card Designs

I just love this Ruff Day dog set from Stampin Up! SOOO cute! So fun! I think my fave is the little dog with the beret on his head but this is a close second. I just had to make this card and have a little fun with the sentiment…Bone 2 B Wild! I’ve had lots of soft and pretty and lots of clean and Spring-like so it is time to shake things up a little around here! LOL If you take a look at my counter…I think it is pretty much time to have some more blog fun too! Check back soon!

I actually came up with this sentiment idea when I was brain-storming for a Design Call. While making a quick stop at my local scrapbook store a few months ago….my oldest son actually came in the store with me!  (Perhaps it was to breathe down my neck to make sure I didn’t get lost in there!) He saw this fun Harley Davidson tread pattern paper and wanted me to make something with it. I just about dropped…not too often he comments about anything I’m working on unless it is (as he thinks) constructive critism. LOL One thing that is kind of amusing though…Papercrafts seems to take a lot of the designs he hates, so I try to design things he is really going to dislike.;)

For this card I started off with a top hinged card made from black cardstock. The cool Harley Davidson is actually pre-embossed…I just love the texture of it. I added a strip of it down the right side leaving a large space on the left and a tiny border of black on the right. I then added a narrow strip of Sahara Sand cardstock and evenly set eyelets the whole length of the strip. I used my favorite tool…my Crop-a-dile for this. The design was actually planned with its limitations in mind…you can only set eyelets so far from the edge with the Crop-a-dile, so I plan around that. I just hate having to go back to a regular eyelet setter!

For the main image, I stamped this fun little party dog onto sahara sand cardstock and then watercolored him. I inked the edges of my paper with basic black ink direct from the ink pad and kind of swiped it to give it that edgy look. For the sentiments, I used my Dymo label maker. I love it for creating sentiments that I don’t have stamps or rub-ons for and I really think it adds to the “industrial” look of this card. The little bone paperclip I added on to highlight the Be Wild. It is from Staples Business Dept and a package of them are really fun and reasonable. The last little touch I added was some paper piercing. I thought the left side of my design needed a little subtle definition so I pierced a little bracket of holes along the left side and around the corners with my mat pack.

Julia, I love seeing you branch out into different styles of cards. Maybe you’d been doing that all along and I just hadn’t noticed? I love this fun, edgy card as much as your recent crisp spring cards, and (what I consider) your traditional antique-y flower cards.

This is awesome…I have a slew of male relatives so it is always nice to see some masculine-themed cards!

Julia, this is so adorable! I love the idea of the strip of cardstock with the eyelets. I thought it was twill tape with the eyelets already in it that you purchased (I have some in black). Love the idea of creating it yourself with any color!

Super cute card! Any guy would be happy to receive it. I love the phrase done with the label maker. It makes me want to run out and get one too. Nicely done, Julia.

Your card is darling and sooo clever! I’m curious as to how you manage to watercolor on CS…doesn’t the paper buckle a bit or start to deteriorate with the dampness? This is what happens to me and I have to change over to watercolor paper!
